The Bandi Schaum Community Garden started in the spring of 2012. We’re located in South Side Park, in the South Side Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh, just off Mission Street [directions].
The garden at Bandi Schaum field is a project of the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association, South Side Community Council, City of Pittsburgh, and Grow Pittsburgh. The groups saw the need for a collective space for folks in our community to come and garden together. Located on the site of the old baseball field at Bandi Schaum, spring 2012 was the garden’s inaugural season.
We are excited to be part of a larger park, called South Side Park. South Side Park completed the master plan process to make the park more accessible, attractive and safe, and to manage the storm water and is currently starting some projects that were planned. One of the first exciting additions will be an ADA trail that will make a loop close to the garden. From the trail, visitors will be able to take a peek at the lovely gardens and enjoy the sights and smells in this beautiful green space in the city.
Bandi Schaum community gardeners will also benefit from the changes happening in the park! Be sure to check out some of the trails and wild features of the park next time you’re up at the garden! Simply start at the trailhead located off the garden parking lot.
